My Story

Why Shelter Connect Matters

A rustic wooden footbridge crossing a sunlit path surrounded by lush greenery and golden wildflowers

In 2022, my world collapsed. Escaping a situation of domestic violence, I suddenly found myself facing the terrifying reality of homelessness. In a matter of days, my child, our two dogs, and I went from trying to survive a crisis at home to living out of our car, desperate to find safety.

During the hardest days of my life, I discovered a harsh truth: when you are already in crisis, finding a safe place to sleep should not throw you into another one. Too often, it does. I spent grueling hours calling shelters, waiting on hold, and hitting dead ends — all while trying to keep my child and our pets safe in a cramped front seat. When you are in survival mode, every minute spent searching for an open bed is a minute spent in danger.

But we survived. And as we rebuilt our lives, I realized that God was preparing me to use this pain for a greater purpose.

I did not just want to survive what happened to me — I wanted to make sure the next family did not have to. I started looking for ways to help, but the vision did not fully take shape until Easter Day 2026.

That day, I was having lunch with a close friend, and as we talked through the brutal reality of what it takes for a homeless family to find an open bed, everything clicked. We realized God had a plan — that my path had led me to this exact moment, and that He was about to use it to disrupt this crisis. In that room, driven by faith and purpose, Shelter Connect was born.

Shelter Connect is the bridge I wish my family had in 2022. It will be a streamlined, real-time directory built to instantly connect families in crisis with available, open shelter beds — a platform grounded in efficiency, dignity, and speed. Right now, we are building the foundation it stands on: a community of shelters, churches, and schools ready to answer when a family calls.

To truly fulfill this mission, we cannot work in silos. Our goal is to give every area church and school direct access to this platform. Houses of worship are often the very first place a desperate family turns for help. By equipping local ministries with this real-time tool, we can ensure that no matter whose doors a family knocks on, no one is left out in the cold.

I know the fear of not knowing where your child is going to sleep tonight. But I also know the power of a united, faith-driven community. With Shelter Connect, we are turning real-time data into real-time safety — so that help is always within reach.
